Memory foam products arrive with a distinct smell, and it is expected, temporary and worth handling deliberately.
What It Is
Polyurethane foam is made through a chemical reaction, and small quantities of volatile compounds remain in the material after manufacture.
Those disperse into the air over time, which is what you smell. The process is usually called off-gassing.
Compression and vacuum packing concentrate it, so the smell is strongest at the moment a package is opened and declines from there.
The Certifications
Two appear on foam products and they cover different things.
CertiPUR-US tests the foam for content, emissions and durability, made without certain substances including ozone depleters, particular flame retardants, mercury and formaldehyde.
Oeko-Tex tests textiles against limits for harmful substances, which applies to covers as well as fill.
Where a site states these are the maker’s claim as it appears on the listing rather than asserting them independently, as at bespillow.net, that is a more careful framing than most, and the useful step is to check the certificate reference on the product itself.
How Long It Lasts
- Strongest in the first few hours after unwrapping
- Substantially reduced within a few days
- Usually gone within one to two weeks
- Warmth and airflow speed it up considerably
- A cold, closed room slows it down
What to Do
Unwrap it in a well-ventilated room, ideally not the bedroom, and leave it uncovered with a window open.
Give it at least twenty-four hours before use where you can, and longer if the smell is strong.
Do not seal it in plastic to contain the smell, which prevents the process finishing.
Sunlight is not the answer: ultraviolet light degrades polyurethane and makes it yellow and brittle. Shade with moving air is right.
Neither Means Odourless
Certified foam still off-gasses. The certifications are about which substances are present and at what levels, not about smell.
If It Persists
A strong smell still present after two or three weeks is unusual and worth raising with the seller.
Sensitivity
Anyone with asthma, chemical sensitivity or a respiratory condition should air a new foam product thoroughly in another room, and for longer.
